Len Herron, DOB 10-06-49. Started school in Thangool, & finish my primary schooling at Pie Creek, where we lived next door to the Baptist Church and the school, where Dad had his dairy farm.

A short stint at Gympie South School and grades 8,9,10, at the Gympie State.

I was a model student whilst at school – “joke”.
In 1966 I commenced my apprenticeship as a motor mechanic, the year of decimal currency was introduced.

I completed my apprenticeship and  joined the army on the 27th of January 1970 under the National Service. Posted to Singleton [the second coldest hole] in Australia. From there onto Bandiana for core training, before being posted to B sqd.2 Cav at Enoggera in Brisbane.

Then to the[ first coldest hole] in Australia Cunangra before being posted to 106 Fld Wksps in Nui Dat, South Vietnam, arriving Christmas Eve,1970.

I Finished my tour of duty and was discharged on the 15th of November 1971,to return to my place of previous employment. Stayed in the motor industry until 1979. Then spent 5 years working in a local sawmill, and then 20 long years working at the local particleboard factory [C.S.R.].

With my first wife I had 2 girls, [1 married 1 still single]and a son [engaged], remarried 2001 to Janelle, and currently living at The Palms Gympie.

  • Have been mixed up with horses for a few years, member of the local R.S.L. since 1978, and now a committee member of that Club.
  • Have served on the executive of the local S.E.A.K. committee and now Secretary of the local Vietnam Veterans Association. P.S.
  • I have been on the T.P.I. pension since June 2004.

We have done some travelling in Australia and China and Turkey, and Hope do a lot more before my time ends.
